Beyond these big radio hitters, you got some other really awesome songs on here. For example, Ramona Was A Waitress by Paul Dempsey is a really charming track about a waitress that knows everything and Home by Edwarde Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros which is a very cute alt-country/indie track. The SA favourites The Hilltop Hoods make an appearance with Chase That Feeling as well as Aussie hard rockers Karnivool with their intense anti-society track Set Fire to the Hive. There is such a great spread of genres and bands that it makes for a really good buy.

Band of the Week

THEIR SOUND

The band has a pop/indie kind of sound that really reminds me of the Artic Monkeys and The Wombats, with a really dance-around kind of sound that really hooks you and makes you want to jump around. The music, as you might have guessed is very energetic. Their track, How We Roll, was featured on the second podcast as well as holding a nice spot on the Unearthed Charts.

Band of the Week (19/4/2010) + An Update

BAND OF THE WEEK

PIECE OF ACE ( SOUTH AUSTRALIA)

This week's band of the week, Piece of Ace, are a local, all girl. four piece punk/indie band from Adelaide and they are the very first band to be featured as band of the week. So basically, this band of the week thing is to show you guys some bands you may not have heard of, and promote them. So without further ado, let's get into the nitty gritty.

THE BAND

Ira- Vocals
Bayley-Lead Guitar
Camilla-Bass
Caitlin- Drums

THEIR SOUND

Piece of Ace( formerly known as Bird is the Word, and before that Deer Boy, Fight Her) have a very punky, catchy sound. Their songs are really riff driven and hooky- though not predictable. After listening to their songs a few times, they kind of get stuck in your head. The light punk style is refreshing and easy to listen to- it's not something you'd head bang to but that's okay. It's their listener freindly style that draws you in and keeps you there.

UPCOMING GIGS

30/4/2010 @ The Cavern, Adelaide- $10

1/5/2010 @ Fowlers Live w/ Sonny Loveless- Cost TBA

News Update, 15/4/2010

TRIPLE J UNEARTHED HIGH

Triple J's annual search for a highschool talent is returning this year, which means that every teen garage band in Australia that can scrounge up the money to get into a studio can enter. When it comes around later in the year, be sure to hit up Triple J Unearthed to vote for the best acts, and propell some 4 piece garage band to semi-stardom. As I mentioned in the first Podcast, BREACH were placed third in last years competition, and recently I talked with Alex Christophel, the drummer from the band, to discuss this years competition. He stated that the band has been writing new songs but they "sound way too much like U2". Nevertheless, it will be up to us to see if that's true when they release their new tracks with the full band for this years competition. During this years competition we will be right here to cover it, and give you guys the leading bands so that you can vote. On that note, when BREACH debut their new tracks, they will also be featured in a podcast- so stay tuned.

CLEARLY TALENTED @ THE AVOCA HOTEL

Currently, The Avoca Hotel is running an +18 Accoustic competition, for anyone who can enter I definatley suggest it. I think it works in a bracket/tournament kind of deal, and the first prize is $1000 dollars! So, if you can head on over to http://www.avocahotel.com.au/pages/clearlytalented/ctapplication.html
and fill out a form. All the information regarding the actual competition is right here

WEDNESDAY REVIEW: JAPANDROIDS: POST NOTHING

So, It is my pleasure to introduce our very first review, this week focusing on the up and coming Vancouver band, Japandroids. If you guys are wondering why I am not reviewing an Australian band, the reason is that I have no Australian EP's ready on hand to review- so that's were you come in. If you are an artist with an EP, or you know someone who has an EP and you like that one particularly, send it on over to shade-of-black@hotmail.com , our temporary email adress while the new one is being set up, and I will get back to you and try and review them. Until then..

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JAPANDROIDS, POST-NOTHING

THE ALBUM
The Japandroids are a two piece Garage rock act straight out of Vancouver, in the frozen north and have just signed a record deal after independantly producing their last two EPs. Post-Nothing is the Japandroids debut LP, and if it is any indication of how the band will do in the years to come, I really look forward to the upcoming releases. It's a frantic blend of fast beats and catchy lyrics with really interesting, yet simple guitar. You can tell that these guys have had alot of time just jamming, and it sounds like a really good jam in someones garage- that kind of raw energy that is just born from pure spontenaity. It's a very interesting album, in that it sound simple, but don't be decieved- the melodies are created to stick in your head, and when partnered up with the very catchy and hooky lyrics, you'll be singing that shit all day long. Believe me.

THE BAND

Brian King- Guitar
David Prowse- Drums

These guys met in 2006 and have been playing together since, and have recently ( as of last year) signed with Polyvinal Record CO., which is freaking great cause it means that more albums like this one can be released. Currently the band is going on a year long tour of North America and Europe, spreading their stuff around.

CHOICE SONGS

Young Hearts Spark Fire- The catchy lyrics and simple melody really draw you in, and after a few listens, it is in your head and you can't get it out. You will be humming this one for a while.

Heart Sweats- Again, really catchy. Especially the lyrics, which are kind of ridiculous but very cool. The bass like guitar leading into the song really gets your attention.

DOWNSIDES
- Some of the songs get a little repetitive, and if you are a fan of more complex stuff, this ain't your album
-The kind of sound remains constant over the whole album, so if you are looking for a album of great variation ( something like Songs For The Deaf) you are looking in the wrong place.

FINAL RATING

8.5/10

A really good debut album, and I hope that their next few releases are as good as this one, if not better.
